Positive: The hostel is walking distance from the pier, flat roads too which is beneficial in the heat. Owners and volunteers here were lovely and very helpful with our enquiries about getting a ferry back to mainland Cambodia. Bed was comfier than most we’ve slept on and there’s tons of cracking places to eat nearby including Bongs and Cambodia Kitchen.
Negative: More so recommendations for owners and information for future visitors vs. a bad review. All rooms are under one roof, meaning while technically a “private room” is just your bed and four walls, you can hear everything from everyone else staying in the hostel and it doesn’t feel particularly private. It was extremely noisy from music downstairs on our first night too but we managed to sleep in the end, the second night was better. In our private room specifically, there were gaps in the wooden planks that formed the walls and floor (and whole upstairs) meaning we could see through to the dorm room and vice versa and anyone below us in the main area could look up into the room - taking away the private element further. Additionally, we had no curtain on the window which meant daylight shone through early morning and privacy was lacking again. Finally, the rooms don’t have locks on them so we had to use one of our own from our backpacks to ensure our room was “locked” which we were surprised to find and not be told about when checking in. Our mosquito net had holes in it, despite this being a necessity as the bedrooms are not sealed from the outside island due to the lack of roof, we were eaten alive in our sleep even though we used the net. The stairs are VERY steep so if you struggle with these, be wary. They were not a problem to us, but I imagine they could be to some. The shared bathrooms also have no ceiling and are at the bottom of the stairs so don’t feel very private either and the showers are cold - not a huge problem as it’s boiling on the island and with fan only rooms as advertised, the cold shower is welcomed but it does feel very basic. Overall, you get what you pay for here at £6.50pppn that we paid for the private room however, there’s definitely work to be done on this hostel by the new owners who took over recently as there’s a lot of potential for the hostel here on a cracking little island in the M’Pai village area.
