Positive: this is a difficult review for me. where ever i travel i choose according to reviews - always with an average rating well above 9 and then i almost always rate these 10. also, several times i have tried a completely new or newly added apartment and they were in vast majority of cases simply perfect - a total 10 with no hesitation. when i booked this one it had no review yet and it was presented as a ''new one''. the photos are nicely arranged so i had no suspition. the reality was a bit cruel. but i will be objective - in another part of the world this could be a standard (and for a completely different price, of course) but i was in the centre of a western european capital. well, was i? more about it in the ''didnt like'' section. as a plus i can surely point out that it is very close to the castle (just walk up the hill) and to the very centre of the baixa (praca do comercio). a metro station is a minute walk from the apartment (by the way, you get by metro from the airport with one change, so no taxi needed). rossio train station (trains to sintra) some 7 minutes walk. a continente brand grocery 4 mintes walk, also the famous tram line 28 has a terminus stop there (always huge queues). i also comfortably walked from cais do sodre station (cascais line).
Negative: i could not get into the apartment upon arrival. the street door was permanently opened but i was unable to open the locker with the apartment key in it. fortunately a cleaning lady appeared soon and found the key under the doormat. internet did not work but the cleaning lady had another password so she made it work. TV did not work but i didnt mind. one night, the permanently opened street door was suddenly locked and the code i got in instructions didnt work to open it. so i was left in the street at 1 am. for almost 2 hours! no one picked the phone. it was a terror. i shouted, hit the door, rang all bells, even went to a police station! no one could help, police said it is my problem. after 2 hours i managed to wake up someone from the house and he came to unlock the street door for me! the apartment is not new. there is mold. the small window at the table faces the street uphill so everyone passing around can see inside. you cannot get easily to the big window because the bed is all across the width of the room. the seats have dirty stains. one day i found a big cockroach in the shower corner, finally it fortunately escaped into the sewage, i wouldnt know how to kill it. finally, the whole area is very scary! i was the only european all around. this is a complete immigrant ghetto. martim moniz square is full of camping homeless from different continents. i talked to the police in the street and they advised me not to get out in that area during night (if i have to, just carry a mobile and a bank card, nothing else). that it is full of drug addicts and criminals. police told me they leave the square at 11pm and will not get back until morning. i am a big fan of portugal for decades and speak the language fluently but this area is portugal only in architecture.
