Acest cartier îşi datorează dezvoltarea în primul rând construcţiei căilor ferate şi dezvoltării rapide a legăturilor feroviare cu mai multe localităţi în toate direcţiile. S-a numit Gara Mare, Gara din Iosefin, Gara Domniţa Elena şi apoi Gara de Nord. În zona dintre Bega şi Gară a luat un mare avânt industria si comertul.
