The seafaring tradition of Porto Recanati is well documented in the Sea Museum, which is located in the complex of the former fish market, a modern structure on two levels built between 1975 and 1980 next to the old fish market.
To the south of the city is the archaeological area of the Roman city Potentia, near which the remains of the Abbey of Santa Maria in Potenza, founded by the order of the crucifers in the 12th century, are visible. A typical dish of the Marche town is brodetto, a single fish-based dish. The Porto Recanati variant involves the absence of tomato and the addition of zafferanella or saffronone (wild saffron from the Conero) which gives the dish a yellowish colour.
