Rosedene was originally the Miners Arms public house from the 18th century until early in the 20th century where miners received their wages twice a year and probably spent a good portion of them. The guest suite is where those worse for wear were hung over a rope to sober up – hence ‘hangover’. The pub’s stallion was kept below in what is now the workshop.
A traditional Yorkshire welcome of Wensleydale cheese and home-made fruit cake, tea and coffee are provided on arrival. Also provided are bedding, bathroom towels, Wi-fi, hairdryer, soap, shower cream, iron, ironing board, tea-towels, dish cloths, washing-up liquid, coal and kindling.
Continental breakfast is provided at an additional cost if requested before noon the previous day and can either be served in the hosts' kitchen or delivered to the guest suite.
Optional extras include laundry, secure bike storage and baggage pick up and drop off.
Rosedene lies in the picturesque Swaledale village of Gunnerside in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Originally an old Norse hamlet, Gunnerside dates back to the 10th century, where Gunnar had his summer pastures processing butter which was distributed as far afield as London. The name Gunnerside originates from the personal name ‘Gunnar’ and ‘Saetr’ meaning hill or pasture.
The village expanded in the 18th century with the local lead mining industry, evidence of which can still be seen in the area.
The area is perfect for walkers, cyclists and lovers of nature.
For walkers countless tracks lead directly from the village including the ‘Corpse Way’. There are meadow walks – some of the best wildflower meadows in the UK in early Summer and slopes covered in wild garlic in Spring - , river walks, hill climbs – hills covered in heather turn a beautiful shade of purple in August – and the opportunity to explore the history of lead mining. Gunnerside is on the Coast to Coast and Herriot Way routes and close to the Pennine Way.
We are happy to discuss arrangements for baggage drop off and pick up.
The area includes some of the best road cycling and hill climbs in England while Gunnerside is on the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway and was on the 2014 Tour de France and 2020 Tour de Yorkshire routes.
Mountain biking trails lead straight from the door.
Secure bike storage and cleaning facilities are available on request.
Gunnerside benefits from its own community owned pub the Kings Head (open Wednesday to Sunday) and cafe. Nearby pubs include the Farmers Arms in Muker and the Punch Bowl in Low Row a 5 minute drive and several pubs in Reeth a 10 minute drive. There are also cafes in Muker and Reeth. A fish and chip van calls at several points between Reeth and Gunnerside on Friday evenings. There is a selection of shops in Reeth and the Swaledale Woollens shop in Muker.
Numerous walking tracks, road cycling routes and mountain bike trails lead straight from the door.
Nationally renowned walking routes include the Coast to Coast and Herriot Way as well as being close to the Pennine Way.
Road cycling routes include the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway.
We are easily accessible by car on the B6270.
There is a bus service between Gunnerside and Richmond and between Gunnerside and Keld.
