Positive: Rapa Nui is magical and the Cabanas Varua Guest House is the perfect place to stay. Utimi and Cata are two of the most generous and kind people I've ever met and the rental house has a kitchen, living room, dining room, two bedrooms, and a furnished front and back porch. I had the house to myself but it's possible to share with 3-4 people. I bought all my food for the week in Santiago, checked the box with Latam for free, and everything I needed was in the kitchen. A washing machine is available on the back porch and the living room has a TV, stereo, and magazines about Rapa Nui. This was my second visit to the island but Utimi and Cata made my visit so special that I wanted to stay an extra week.
Negative: Much of what is posted online about the airport process is out of date. You no longer need to wait in different lines to have papers checked. You just check-in with Latam like any other domestic flight showing nothing but your passport. I took the first airport bus from the bus terminal near the University de Santiago metro stop at 0530 (0500 weekdays), arrived at the domestic terminal at 0600, checked my cardboard box of food, and walked to the gate by 0640. At security, tell the officers that you are going to Rapa Nui and the will direct you to the PDI in the corner just before security. PDI only needs to see your return flight. Your hotel reservation and other Sernatur info has been transmitted to them via the application website. I could only fill out the application for Rapa Nui three weeks before my flight but it only took seconds to receive the approval email. After security, you'll be in the same gate area as all domestic flights. Rapa Nui flights used to depart from gate 12 but due to renovations, we departed from gate 16. Both of these gates are upstairs and about 10 minutes walking from security. My flight was at 0935 so you don't need to arrive at the airport three hours early anymore. One to two hours is enough. Enjoy!
