Glorious water views and dramatic sunsets can be seen daily from the expansive wall of windows in this character-filled home on Mt. Desert Island with views of this scenic marina with lobster boats and sounds and smells of the sea. Located on the Quiet Side of MDI our location on Bass Harbor allows you to take in the sea breezes and bask in ocean views of pink and orange sunsets across the harbor each evening. With the village of Southwest Harbor just down the street, enjoy restaurants, ice cream shops, the local library and gentle things to do in a more relaxed and casual atmosphere.
If you are off to hike, enjoy close access to many Acadia entrances including but not limited to Acadia Mountain, Hulls Cove, and Echo Lake. The famous Bass Harbor Lighthouse is just over one mile down HWY 102A. Downtown Bar Harbor offers the hustle and excitement of the most desired small town in America and is 11 miles away.
The Gray Barn Carriage House was rebuilt approximately 20 years ago and had stood where a historic "gray barn" stood for over 100 years and acted as a gathering place for local kids to play and shoot hoops and hang out. A favorite location among locals, the home is intended to provide a warm, classic, barn styled cozy cottage for all who visit. The main kitchen and living and dining area is completely open and offers views throughout all windows. Rustic wood throughout adds character and cleanliness. No carpet is present in the unit. (Only area rugs). Two sets of stairs allow for a 3-story view from the bunk room where you can sit and have coffee, work on your computer or rest and relax after a long-day hiking and enjoying the sights of Acadia National Park.
The exclusive Carriage house offers an open concept living. You enter the home on the main floor which houses the washer and dryer. You pass those on the right side and go up the stairs On the main floor which actually the second floor (to allow for dramatic views) your living space is sun-filled and serene. The fully equipped and full sized kitchen has a bar with seating and is open to the family room area which sports a large new sectional with ottoman. Smart TV's are in all bedrooms and the main family living space. The open dining area sits directly in front of the expansive wall of windows. You are able to see the view of the harbor from almost every single window in every room in the house. Birds sing peacefully and you may hear a fog horn in the distance.
The Second floor is an entire bunk room space for your living enjoyment. There is a large king-sized bed as well as a seating area with chairs. An additional full sized bed is on the other side of the room. Room Darkening shades and curtains allow for "sleeping in" during the height of Mt. Desert Island early sunrises.
Enjoy the back yard as it overlooks a small open grassy meadow via a small gravel driveway. Take a walk to the water and breathe in!! The tide is active on the harbor and you are able to see the changes and explore some rocks! Adjacent to the entrance is a large, nice deck with a table and four chairs. Enjoy this space for a cup of coffee and view of the water in the early mornings or evenings. Don't hesitate to bring lawn chairs or your kayaks to explore the Harbor, circle around the island and head over to Thurston's Lobster pound for lunch or dinner.
Whether you are coming to the Bar Harbor area for excitement, serenity or just a vacation getaway, the peaceful landscape of Mt. Desert Island will not disappoint. We encourage you to take advantage of the serenity, hiking, mountain climbing, boating, golf, fishing, swimming and whale watching! Kick a few of those items off your bucket list!
A word to note about internet and cell service. We have powerful broadband for your usage and convenience (400Mbps). Most cell carriers work well, but we have noticed T-Mobile specifically is spotty with coverage. Rental is 4 day minimum stay~ or 7 day stay with Check-out's on SUNDAY'S.
